Important Early Films

The following are either excerpts of a film or the complete film. They will help you visualize the look of early movies. In the video from The Birth of a Nation, you can see the black “soldiers” as they are trying to attack the white residents of the house and the Ku Klux clan army as they ride to save the white folks. The excerpt from 1927’s The Jazz Singer features Al Jolson, the most famous American singer of the time. He used to sing in blackface, which wasn’t considered insulting at the time. Enjoy!
